Maximum Speeds achievable

When discussing the average expected access speed it is important to remember that external factors can also limit these speeds. The following are some of the limiting factors that may prevent your service from reaching the theoretical maximum speeds:

  • The capability of the router you are using at home
  • The strength of your home network
  • The PC and the software you are using
  • The number of devices connected at any one time

Can I get ADSL2+ to my home?

Boom Broadband can provide ADSL2+ bundles to most exchanges within Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Check the availability tab to see if you can find the closest exchange to your home.

Can I transfer my service from another provider?

Yes you certainly can. You can keep your existing phone number also!

Do I need a phone line for my ADSL2+ connection?

A phone line is required for an ADSL2+ connection. The monthly price and setup price includes a standard activation of a phone line to your home.

How long does it take to get connected?

The whole process usually takes around 1 to 2 weeks. It involves us arranging for Telstra to activate the phone line to your home. Normally that is the longest part of the process and will take approximately 10 business days. Your internet service will be activated between 24-48 hours after that. Of course in every instance we try to get your service activated as soon as possible.

Do I need a modem from Boom Broadband?

A modem is required to connect to the internet with an ADSL2+ service. Boom Broadband can provide one fully configured and delivered to your door for a small cost. You can however provide your own device. You will need to configure your device with the provide username and password once your service is activated however. Boom Broadband can only provide limited support for devices not provided by us.

How fast will my internet service be?

ADSL2+ services are provided up to a maximum of 24 Mbps download speeds and 1 Mbps upload speeds. These are theoretical maximums and it is very rare that speeds will reach these speeds. Speeds will be impacted by the quality of the copper line to your home and hardware you are using. The distance of your home to the exchange will cause the most impact of your service. The further you are from an exchange the more reduction in speed you will experience.

NBN Battery Backup

Please read the following important information about battery backup for your NBN service.
Your NBN service is provided through a box installed at your premises called a network termination device (NTD), which requires power to operate. Without battery backup, you will be unable to use any NBN services during a power outage.

Important limitations

The battery backup unit:

  • May only last a few hours: A fully charged battery in perfect condition may last up to 11 hours. If the battery is not fully charged, kept in sub-standard conditions or is aged, it may last for less than three hours.
  • Will only power the Network Termination Device: If your telephone requires mains power to function, then it will remain inoperable in a power outage, even if you have a battery backup unit.

About your service

Your broadband service

Without battery backup, you will have no access to your Internet service during a power outage. If you elect to install a battery back-up unit please note that Internet will only be available using a battery-powered device (like a laptop) and this device may need to be reconfigured. The service will only last as long as both the laptop and the NTD remain powered.

Your VoIP service

If you use a phone over Internet service (like VoIP), you won’t be able to make or receive calls at all (including calls to emergency service numbers like 000) during a power outage, even if you have a battery backup unit.

Your NBN UNI-V phone service

This will only work in a power outage to make and receive calls (including emergency service numbers like 000) if you have a battery backup unit and you use either:

  • A standard corded telephone handset that is not dependent on mains power and is connected to a voice port on the NTD; or
  • A cordless handset that has its own back-up power supply that is in working order.

Medical and security alarms

If you, or anyone else in your premises intends to use a medical or security alarm with your NBN service, we recommend that you obtain a battery backup unit.
It is your responsibility to ensure that any medical or security alarm equipment you use will operate during a power outage and this equipment is compatible with your NBN service. If you are in any doubt you should contact the supplier.

Customer Service Guarantee Waiver

For Boom Broadband to offer a residential grade phone service over the NBN at a reasonable price we request that all users waive their rights under the Customer Service Guarantee. In essence this means that you will not be allowed to claim compensation if we fail to meet set standards for connection times and fault restoration. We ask you to do this because we cannot guarantee the restoration time of your service if a fault occurs with the internet or your underlying physical connection that supports your Internet service. This waiver does not stop you from contacting us about a fault with your service, and it is not a waiver for us to avoid doing our best to restore or provision your service as quickly as possible. The waiver is explained in detail below, this is important information, please read it all before agreeing by signing the waiver at the bottom of the page.

The Customer Service Guarantee

Information about the Customer Service Guarantee (CSG) may be found on the Australian Communications and Media Authority website http://www.acma.gov.au

  • The CSG requires us to meet minimum performance standards for standard telephone services. The minimum CSG requirements are:
  • The provision of written information at least every two years (or upon request at any time) about the CSG performance standards, our obligations and your right to compensation under the CSG.
  • Guaranteed maximum periods to connect new services
  • Guaranteed maximum periods for fault rectification
  • Maximum time frames for customer appointments.

The CSG contains exceptions for certain events such as extreme weather. If we do not meet the requirements and an exception doesn’t apply, you may be entitled to compensation under the CSG.

Waiver of the CSG

Boom Broadband can propose that you waive your rights under the CSG.
You have no obligation to consent to the proposed waiver. However, if you do not consent we reserve the right to decline your application.
By agreeing to this waiver you will not be entitled to any CSG rights, specifically the provision of written information about the CSG, guaranteed maximum connection periods, guaranteed maximum rectification periods and maximum time frames for appointments. You will not be entitled to compensation for failure to meet such performance standards.
